British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
